He was born near Camden in Kershaw District, SC. At age 10 (1935 or so) he and his family moved to Brundidge, Pike County, AL.  He and his wife, Eunice Barr, bought and owned 236 acres of land in the McLure settlement, near White Water Creek, just off present (1978) US 231 Highway, going from Troy to Brundidge. This land was sold later to William Patterson and Caroline Isabella Carroll McLure on November 1 1886.  This land was passed to their son William Rankin and Lelia McLure, and then to their three children, Mary, Nell, and William Rankin.   Samuel Rankin McLure served with the Confederate States Army in Co. A. 57th AL Regt.  The company muster rolls for Sept. and Oct 1863, las on file, show him present.  However, Union Prisoner of War Records show that Samuel R. McClure, surname also borne as McLure, Sergeant, same company , was captured near Nashville, TN on Dec. 16, 1864, imprisoned at Camp Douglas, Chicago, IL where he was paroled on Mar 14, 1865.  He was received by the Confederate agent at Boulware's Warf, James River, VA on March 18th or 21st, 1865, admitted to Gen. Hosp. Howard's Grove, Richmond, VA before death, and died Mar. 28, 1865, cause not stated. This information was furnished by E.T. Conley, Major General, The Adjutant General, on Jan. 16, 1937.  His grave was also located and was recorded in error as "S.R. McLane, Co. C, 52nd AL Regt," grave number 106 Row M, Div. G. Oakwood Cemetery, Richmond, VA. (From Frank McLure, Samuel's Story", 1978, p. 5. and "The McLure Record", Wm. R. McLure, 1959, p. 2)

NOTE: The death date is listed by W.R. McLure as Mar. 29 1965 instead of Mar 28 1965.
